New Online Portfolio and Services Page

portfolio imageAh… the online portfolio.

Like so many things about “self-marketing”, when things are going well we tend to push them back. I had it on my To-Do list for quite some time but it took a couple of, “so where’s your portfolio” inquiries to finally make me put aside some time this last Memorial Day weekend and put something together.

I had thought long and hard as to whether I should use straight HTML to present my work or use Flash. I ultimately chose the latter. Besides how nice a multimedia presentation tool it is, I like to keep the whole presentation self-contained. I can also bundle it up and send it off as a self-running demo on a CD if I choose, complete with slick transitions. I also prefer the little extra security that embedding imagery in Flash presents. No temptation to “drag and drop” an image to the desktop, it’s not easily possible. And anything other than that is pure calculated thievery.

I had planned on building it all by hand in Flash (and still may do so in the future) but came across Todd Dominey’s SlideShowPro, a Flash MX 2004 component which is rather slick. It uses XML and external images sources and is a breeze to update and maintain which is key for me when I’m busy with client work.

Along with the updated online portfolio, I’ve included a services page which quickly outlines just a few of the things I do for clients, from traditional and digital illustration to animation and interactive design.

This is just one of a few more updates to this site, so be sure and stay tuned…

For the love of WordPress!

Saturday, April 9th, 2005

It’s been a few months since I’ve moved my site over to WordPress for journaling, more as an experiment in automation since before I wrote and archived everything manually.

I’m currently using version 1.2 in combination with MarsEdit to write and post journals. It’s a great combination that so far has worked seamlessly. MarsEdit is fantastic because writing in it is like drafting emails. You set a title, select your categories, and start typing within the body, just like an email. You can save as a draft, preview your post and when you’re ready, you click “Send to Weblog” where it automagically is posted to the site.

The fact that everything works so nicely has kept me from moving up to WordPress 1.5 but the buzz about the upgrade is very positive (many folks are coming over from Movable Type). More importantly, this upgrade will allow me to vary my page design and fold in static pages along with an extensive portfolio of work that I’m busy compiling and updating.

If all goes well with my upgrade, you’ll hopefully see some exciting changes soon. Wish me luck…

Reindeer Games? Not Quite.

Just wanted to wish you all happy non-denominational holidays. And since the holidays are for giving, I give to you my newest Flash-based game “Polar Golf”. This game — designed in conjunction with rasterhaus interactive and some simple yet elegant golf code donated by one Jeff Gibson (FlashKit) — utilizes some Flash MX code, so you’ll need Macromedia’s latest plug-in.

Polar Golf has you play (as a polar bear named, “Solomon Bruin”) 9 holes of miniature golf in a polar environment complete with the appropriate arctic hazards! If you are not using JavaScript or in some cases with pop-ups turned off, the window won’t open. In that case, use this link instead.

Enjoy!
